| Contextual Notes | The CORWIN was built at Portland in 1876, and served continuously in Northwest waters. She was sold in early 1900 to J.E. Ryus of Whatcom for $17,025 (p. 57). She was the first ship to break through the ice and reach Nome in 1903, 1904, 1906, 1909, and 1914 (p. 93, 99, 122, 164, 244). She was sold again in 1916 and burned in drydock in Salina Cruz (p. 265). Notes from Gordon Newell, ed., The H.W.
